Washing Away the Winter Blues

Well that is the hope. January started with a lack of enthusiasm all round. Its not like us we enjoy our work and look forward to starting the day. Yes, it’s hard work and there never seems to be enough hours in a day, but we wouldn’t swap it. Through the 3rd lockdown Covid seems to have brought lethargy and a lack of get up and go, and it seemed for a time there would be no good news, but the tide does seem to be turning, even if the weather still finds itself in doldrums, though there is hope on the horizon with Spring near.

The year began with snow, which in its turn changed to continuous rain, we’re thinking we may be able to put our house up for sale as a Prime Waterfront Property with its own mooring rights, yes we are joking but boy its been wet.

When walking the dog and taking our daily exercise nature teaches us no matter what is thrown at it, it still blooms. It is a real mood enhancer, beautiful Fungi have sprung up in the wooded areas, Ferns and mosses cling to the ground and the miracle of life goes on. The odd phenomenon, on, or at the base of trees could be seen on a couple of wet January days, where bubbles form, looking like the trees are fresh from the washing up bowl and waiting for their rinse. It is we believe due to a natural phenomenon where rain water runs down the trunk and turbulence and dissolving chemicals cause the foam, well that’s a laymen’s term, but it can be looked up on the internet. We managed to get a bad picture of it below.

Bubbles on Trees

After marvelling at this foam we walked down to what is usually a small stream which was now swollen by rain. What a powerful force, so breath taking and didn’t need great imagination, to realise the damage a raging torrent could do. It is an awe inspiring site, to see the power nature has. The pictures below show the stream in the snow and as it becomes swollen with rain spilling into the wooded area.

As January began to come to its end the beautiful snowdrops started to appear, they stand proud and defiant even against the harshest of weathers. They always give us a boost and a reminder how nature will combat all that is thrown at it to start afresh.

Its hard to remain in the dumps with nature on your doorstep.
