Envelopes. They are rather insignificant in the grand scheme of things arn’t they? What’s the purpose of them? Are they to simple hold contents safe until opened or maybe its just to have somewhere to write the address? Could it be to make the recipient ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ over it’s beauty and excite them over the surprise content held within, or maybe it’s just to conceal that beauty until its opened? Like with anything there is a time and a place for all types of envelopes. The more you think about it, the more you realise how important they really are depending on the impression you want to give.
At CottageRts, over the last few months we have been thinking a LOT about envelopes. Yeah, we know, how can anyone think that much about envelopes? Well surprisingly there’s a lot to consider (plus it’s a hazard of owning stationery business). Initially, when we started out as a stationery business all our writing set envelopes were kraft brown. It was our thing and they just sort of fitted in with our brand. However over the past year and half our brand has developed. Now we have a range of stationery designs, and for some of our printed envelopes brown just doesn’t do them justice. So recently we have a sourced a lovely quality white envelope to match our writing paper, which punches out the delicate colours of most of our designs.
We do realise though some people prefer plain envelopes on the outside for all sorts of different reasons, and it is an option that remains popular in our shop. As a result we have been looking into further options and are now experimenting with the idea of envelope liners. For envelopes that look plain on the outside the liners give that extra special luxury feeling when the recipient opens them. Adding to the element of surprise from receiving a hand written letter in the first place! We hope to roll out this option across our two most popular designs in the near future having created repeat patterns for both the bee and fern designs ready to be printed on liners.
What do think? Do you prefer printed envelopes and those that conceal a surprise liner inside? Or do you simply like to let the contents do the talking when sending a letter? Let us know what you think below. 🙂
