Well OK not really, and it wasn’t even a Beasty Bodmin. For years we sailed past this beautiful place, memories of a wet day by a wind swept lake, awaiting King Arthur’s sword to arise through the mist, rather put me off. I would have passed out if it actually had. I was wet, cold and none too pleased with my parents choice of a day out and vowed never to visit Bodmin again. Tales of the Beast of Bodmin did nothing to change my mind and yes I know its likely a myth and at my age should know better, Ali tells me that all the time.
Anyway whilst on holiday, Ali and I met couple of locals who convinced us to give a little village called Minions on Bodmin Moor a go (yes we know what you are thinking – we thought the same!) They reported it was a good place to sit and draw, it was steeped in history and wildlife, and what’s more it has magnificent views. We must say we were not disappointed, what a beautiful place. For those of you who love Cornwall, if you haven’t been to Bodmin Moor give it a go. It really is a wonderful place, we were recommended to visit the Hurlers Stone Circles and also the Cheesewring a granite tor, which is a steep climb, but well worth the view at the top. Then those of you who go to Cornwall, know its very hard to find somewhere that isn’t a steep climb!!
In the end we spent a couple of lovely days their sketching, one of our sketches was of an Engine House from past mining in the area, the moor was dotted with them. We are thinking of adding sketches of historic buildings/ruins to our growing list of cards and stationery, so are going to put our toe in the water and see if any of our customers like them, so practice makes perfect, well maybe not, but as near as we can get.
We will leave you with some photographs of the area and a little sketch. Hope this inspires some of you to give this wonderful place a visit.
Oh, just to let you know, we didn’t meet the Beasty, or any little yellow men for that matter, but there were some lovely sheep, cows and horses.
